What Do I Write About?

You’ve read through my posts and have decided to do this thing. To write erotica. But now you might be thinking “but what do I write about?”

The awesome thing about erotica is you can make just about every novel erotic. You could write an erotic-fantasy or an erotic-horror, an erotic-thriller, etc.

Genre

Erotica is essentially a sub genre of romance since they have a romantic element to them. For the sake of this post, we are going to think of Erotica as its own genre.

Let’s think of it as an umbrella:

Every “sub-genre” listed will fall under this umbrella.

  • Fantasy
  • Horror
  • Contemporary Romance
  • Thriller
  • BDSM
  • Age Play
  • Billionaire
  • Hot Wife/Cuckold
  • Anal
  • Exhibitionist/Voyeurism
  • Virgin
  • Ménage
  • Reverse Harem (1 female and 3+males)
  • Interracial
  • Lesbian
  • Gay Male
  • Sci-fi
  • Transgender
  • Paranormal
  • Humor
  • Historical Fiction
  • Taboo*
  • Fetish**
  • Fairy tales
  • Suspense
  • Mystery
  • Victorian
  • Westerns
  • Swingers

* Taboo- taboo stories typically include pseudoincest (“step” relations), mature (young women and older men or older women & younger men), daughter & dads best friend, sister & brother’s best friend, etc.

** Fetish- fetish stories would be those that include fetishes. Foot, underwear, urophilia (peeing), etc.

I’m sure there are more and I’ll update and add them as they come to me but here’s a good list to get you started.

Your Interests

Now you need to think about what interests you. What kind of story do you want to read? That’s the kind of story you need to be writing. Look at the list and figure out which ones draw your attention the most and use those to discover what your passion is. When you do, you have found your niche.

A niche is a great way to have success because your readers will know what to expect from your stories. Of course you can always write in multiple that you like and maybe even start out with several and see which ones work best for you.

Plan

Now you need to sit down with the few genres you like and figure out how many story ideas you think you could come up with. If you feel like you’ll run dry, it’s probably not a good idea to step into that genre. If you feel like you could come up with a lot of different ones (at least more than ten) then you’ve found your genre, your niche, your erotica home.

Once you have narrowed it down (or not) it’s time to start plotting…

If you have other genres you think should be listed, feel free to let me know. I’d hate to leave anyone out!
